I have designed and built countless machining and friction stir welding fixtures over the past few years. The main purpose of machining fixtures is to hold a part in place as it is being machined or welded. This however can get pretty involved depending on the geometry of the part, high forces induced by FSW tool,  heat transfer consideration, and throughput.
